I've traveled extensively internationally and love to hang out in places locals go to. While traveling in Da Nang City, Vietnam, my tour guide inquired if I liked "cafe culture". If you're traveling in Vietnam, one of the enduring legacies of French colonial influence in Vietnam is cafe culture. My guide took me to a place called Gear and I knew I was in the right place. A fire pit was outside in a courtyard, surrounded by small tables of young adults. I happened to sit next to a guy covered with amazing ink. I introduced myself, and the guy next to me admired my tattoos as well. I asked who created his tattoos, and he said he did, and he has his own studio. Of course, I asked if he could create a carp tattoo that I had wanted for a while. We spoke a little about tattoo culture and philosophy. Most tattoo artists hue to the belief that your body is their canvas and they are the artists, so they know best. But in speaking with Vo Thanh Cua aka "Zen", I found him to be surprisingly open to my ideas of design and color. I scheduled an appointment for the next evening and went to his studio. I arrived, and I was immediately impressed. As a tattoo aficionado, I knew I was in the right place. I have visited many studios in the US and outside. Zen's studio rivaled one of the best I've been. The studio was immaculate; you can literally eat off the floors. The lighting was daylight all the way, with the brightest LED lighting, so you could see what would be created. The decor was modern and hip. You could sense his artistry from his design of the studio. His work area was so clean and bright, and his table and armrests showed he cared about his guests' comfort. He showed me his tattoo design based on our conversation, but I was taken aback when he asked how I think it could be improved. We talked a bit more while his assistant set up his work area, and he redesigned my tattoo based on my suggestions. When he finished, I was so thoroughly happy that I let Zen recolor and fix some of my faded tattoos. If ever you visit central Vietnam and want to see a first-rate tattoo studio and want a true artist to give you the ink you want, you have to go to Zen Studio for a truly amazing experience.
